This is my free-for-all contribution to the recent round of [community profile] summer_of_giles . It had been a while since I last made icons, so I made a set of icons with memorable quotes by or about Giles. Feel free to snag if you see any you like!

Summary: What do you get when you try to let a neural network write Spuffy fan fiction? Here you see one of many possible results. Some highlights: Spike losing his virginity while on LSD; an upsetting Buffy/Spike kiss leads to Spike's arrest; some Riley bashing for those who like that sort of thing; and Angelus owning a comics shop.

About a year ago, I made some attempts at using AI to automatically generate Buffy fanfic. It didn't go that well, to be honest, but I decided to give it another try for this year's Spring round of [livejournal.com profile] seasonal_spuffy. I went for a longer story this time, and of course I tried to make it Spuffy (with varying success). The result was weird but fun!

So how was the story made? Everything except the words in bold was written by GPT-2, a state-of-the-art machine learning model for automatic text generation, using this online demo: https://talktotransformer.com/. You only need to give it a starting line as a prompt and then it generates a paragraph of around 100 words. To create a longer story, I fed each ending line back into the model to generate the next part, adding some words of my own to finish incomplete sentences and to (try to) get the story back on the Spuffy track.

On to the weirdness! )

Next, I made two works in the Biffyverse, inspired by Tribel from BuffyForums and first glimpsed in my entry for this year's [livejournal.com profile] summer_of_giles.

The video doubled as my fill for the [livejournal.com profile] buffyversebingo prompt "Flavor". The artwork was made exclusively for [livejournal.com profile] seasonal_spuffy, prompted by the love letters theme.

Apologies for hardly commenting on anyone's posts, life is too busy right now  I did find the time this weekend to take part in the technical fan art challenge over at BuffyForums and fill another square in my [livejournal.com profile] buffyversebingo card (prompt "diary").

Question: If you're a fan but you have no time to do fannish things, what do you do?
Answer: Let AI do it for you.

OpenAI's new language model for text generation has been creating some buzz during the past week, and tonight I've been playing around with the online demo. I gave it some first lines I made up (they're pretty bad) to see if it would   generate something that could pass for Buffy fanfic. Here are the results :-)

Attempt 1
Buffy and Spike were walking in the graveyard when they saw a vampire. READ ON )

Attempt 2
When Angel entered Spike's crypt, the smell that hit him was Buffy's familiar vanilla scent. READ ON )

Attempt 3 (it's Anthony Stewart Head's 65th birthday today -- technically, yesterday --  so I had to try a Giles story as well)
Giles was doing research on the strange demon Buffy had seen while sipping his cup of tea. READ ON )

Try it for yourself, it's fun!

Something else that I'm late with posting, is that my vid Giles is So Worried won runner up in the Under My Skin Award category (fan favourite vid) in this year's Headline Awards. Many thanks to all who voted for it!

Wow, I can't believe I managed to make two vids in only a couple of weeks. Granted, the first one (made for [livejournal.com profile] sb_fag_ends) was really short, and this new one, made for this year's [livejournal.com profile] summer_of_giles, is pretty simple. It basically consists of a whole lot of Giles looking worried, rubbing his face and polishing his glasses. In short, big fun :-)

Note of warning: YouTube blocked the vid in many countries (including the United States and Canada) due to copyright issues, so I put it on Vimeo instead. I hope Vimeo does allow everyone to watch it. Please let me know if you have any problems with it.

Today was my posting day at [livejournal.com profile] summer_of_giles, and my contribution was an icon set dedicated to my favourite Giles pairing: Giles/tea. Here are some teasers; the full set is behind the cut below.
g . g.

This isn't the first time I've made a tribute to this particular pairing. I also made a vidlet about it, back when (SPOILER) Giles died in the Season 8 Buffy comics. (Don't worry, he's alive again, though a bit changed, see icon 18.)  Here's the vid, aptly named TEA. Then, on to the icons!
