Shut Up: a vidding anniversary

The recent Harsh Light of Day review at fantas_magoria (yes, it has started up again, yay!) sparked a good discussion in the comments about Spike and Harmony's relationship and how nasty Spike was to Harmony.

This reminded me of the first fanvid I ever made: a Spike/Harmony vid, set to Shut Up by (of course) The Stranglers. It premiered on BuffyTube on 17 August 2010, in other words, exactly 6 years ago. So I thought I'd repost it here on LJ today, by way of anniversary celebration. Enjoy!

That was your first fanvid ever? Wow, you really started with a bang!

It's a great vid that went straight to my faves. I loved especially the Harmony blabbing to the guitar (how does one call these brief guitar things??? No idea, not even in German right now...) and the ending. The scenes are spot on to the music (yay, The Stranglers :) )

Thanks! It's really a very simple vid, but I must admit I still have a soft spot for it myself. I also like that part you mention (and no, I have no idea what to call it either). And yeah, the ending is essential -- I had to give Harmony her revenge!

Thank you! I see lots of things that could be improved now, but I guess it's not too bad for a first vid. In any case, I still enjoy watching it myself :-) And yeah, I think this is totally a song that Spike himself could get behind.

I had never seen that vid before, but I really like it! I have really mixed feelings about Spike and Harmony's relationship, and this perfectly encapsulated it.

Thank you! Mixed feelings here too. On the one hand, Spike treated her pretty badly but on the other hand, I get why she annoyed him so much, and Harmony was using him too. Both got something out if the relationship that made them put up with the other's behaviour.

So much fun! True, she was annoying and he was mean to her, but she deserved most of it. I feel slightly bad for her getting her feelings hurt, but hello, vampire! She can take it.

Thanks! I totally understand why Spike was so annoyed by her, but I wouldn't say she actually deserved how he treated her. I do think Spike deserved that arrow in the end!

Thank you!! To be honest there's no deep reason behind my choice to start with a Spike and Harmony vid. I had a whole list of songs I wanted to vid, and I thought it would be best to start with the shortest one for my first attempt :-) That just happened to be this one!

I like the video a lot, and also wouldn't believe it was your first. Also, yay for the music!

And wow, I never thought about it, but considering Harmony was kind of a stand in for Buffy, for Spike, his treatment of her looks much more disturbing. Also, for how that's how he treats women he doesn't respect. It suddenly puts his 'hearts and flowers' persona into serious question.

I always loved the line they gave her in Angel - that basically it was wrong for Spike to use her for sex, make him feel like she was his, when he knew she wasn't.

I don't think Harmony was a stand-in for Buffy, except in a purely physical sense. If you compare how Spike treated her to how he treated the Buffybot, who was a stand-in in every way, there's a world of difference. But yeah, the whole reason for how badly he treated Harmony is that he didn't respect her, and that doesn't speak well for him. But at least he didn't have a soul then. That he treats her only marginally better in AtS is more worrisome, I think. Poor Harmony! She could be really annoying but I still liked her (at least after was turned into a vampire, ironically).

You're right. And it's sad that he treated a robot better than her. But then, his fantasy was that is was Buffy, I suppose.

I liked her, too. Especially on Angel. And yeah, becoming a vampire did improve her, lol.

Agreed -- Harmony was actually pretty competent on Angel, and a lot less annoying.

Spike really didn't show his best side in that relationship. :c It's kinda painful to watch. I love how you've fit clips to the instrumental parts!

No, he really didn't, and it is. The nastiness is kinda concentrated in this vid, though. They did occasionally have their --well, not good, but moderately less cringeworthy moments too.

Still loving this - liked seeing it again. She annoyed him but he wasn't above using her sexually. It could not end well, as he was the only vampire capable of love, and not for her.

I try to picture her with a soul, and go Nahhhh.
